Abstract
Motivational Interviewing is a client-centered, directive method for enhancing intrinsic motivation to change by exploring and resolving ambivalence. There has been considerable interest in applying motivational interviewing to health care settings. The utilization of motivational interviewing has been extending to a wide variety of health-related behaviors, such as smoking, weight management, physical exercise, medication compliance, and diabetes management. Typical cases of adapting motivational interviewing for changing addictive behaviors, such as drinking and smoking, are easily available in textbooks or research articles published so far. In Korea, however, there has been a limited number of reports regarding actual utilization of motivational interviewing in health care settings. Furthermore, there is no report about the case where motivational interviewing was applied to help resolve individual¡¯s conflict related to physical health condition during consultation after health examination. The purpose of this article is to introduce how motivational interviewing can be applied to consultation after health examination. We briefly summarized the principles and techniques of motivational interviewing, and then introduced the case where the techniques of motivational interviewing were applied.
